Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, the 27th feature film in the Case Closed/Detective Conan anime franchise, continued to stay at the top the Japanese box office now for the sixth consecutive weekend. The record for the longest stay in first place in the Case Closed/Detective Conan film series is seven weekends — from April to May 2018 — held by Detective Conan Zero the Enforcer, the 22nd film in the series. The Million-dollar Pentagram earned 408 million yen (2.61 million USD) on 278,000 admissions in its sixth weekend of May 17-19, a 24.6 percent week-by-week drop, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. Since debuting in Japanese theaters on April 12, the movie has earned a box office total of 13.5 billion yen (86.32 million USD) from 9.43 million ticket sales. The movie also became the second top-grossing film in the Conan anime franchise, behind only the 2023 film Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine with 13.88 billion yen (88.75 million USD). It also now ranks at 22nd place at the all-time Japanese box office ranking, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and E.T. (1982).

HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle, the first part of the HAIKYU!! FINAL duology anime films, earned 213 million yen (1.36 million USD) on 141,000 admissions in its 14th weekend, climbing up seven spots to second place from last weekend’s ninth place standing. “HAIKYU!! 33.5th Volume,” the bonus booklet distributed to the theatergoers starting May 18, is likely the contributor to the jump. After 93 days on release since February 16, The Dumpster Battle has earned a cumulative 10.6 billion yen (67.78 million USD) on 7.46 million admissions, becoming the 41st top-grossing film of all-time ever released in Japan.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM returned to sixth place in its final weekend. The feature film sequel from the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed franchise will end its Japanese theatrical run on May 23. At the finale stage greeting event held in Tokyo on May 18, the staff announced that the film’s cumulative total box office revenue had reached 4.7 billion yen (30.06 million USD), according to Oricon News.BLUE LOCK THE MOVIE -EPISODE NAGI-, an anime feature film based on the BLUE LOCK side story manga of the same name, went down five positions to eighth place in its fifth weekend.

IDOLiSH7 the Movie LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERIOD, a special concert film from the IDOLiSH7 anime franchise, held a limited revival screening from May 18 to 23 to celebrate the first anniversary of its release in Japan. As a result, the film once again entered the Top 10 in its 53rd weekend, bringing its total revenue to the milestone of 3 billion yen (19.18 million USD) on 1.7 million admissions, following an announcement on the film’s official Twitter account.IDOLiSH7 the Movie LIVE 4bit BEYOND THE PERIOD is now available on Crunchyroll for members in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS and India.

Both of last weekend’s two newcomers — Umamusume: Pretty Derby ROAD TO THE TOP, a new compilation film from the Umamusume Pretty Derby franchise, and trapezium, an anime film adaptation of ex-Nogizaka46 member Kazumi Takayama’s coming-of-age novel, disappeared from the Top 10 in their second weekend.
