The pentagram isn’t the only Detective Conan/Case Closed thing worth a million dollars this past weekend as Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram, the 27th film in the franchise, opened as wide as it could last Friday in Japan and had the biggest opening weekend in the history of Detective Conan making 200 million yen more than Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine.
As of April 14, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram has made 3.34 billion (US$21.69 million) on the back of 2.27 million tickets sold in just three days. Besides the best opening weekend for the franchise, The Million-Dollar Pentagram is now the second-best opening weekend in Japanese box office history behind Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train.
This weekend has brought the entire box office gross for the Detective Conan/Case Closed franchise to a whopping 118 billion yen, keeping second place in Japan’s highest-grossing film franchise ranks behind Doraemon.
Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram released in Japan on April 12, 2024. Chika Nagaoka, who worked on the 23rd film, The Fist of Blue Sapphire (2019), and the 24th film, The Scarlet Bullet (2021), again serves as director on a screenplay by Takahiro Okura, who worked on the 21st film, The Crimson Love Letter (2017), the 23rd film, The Fist of Blue Sapphire, and the 25th film, The Bride of Halloween (2022).
