SEGA-style swords ‘n sandals are on the way to the TV screen in a new format with the reveal of an animated series based on classic arcade beat ’em up Golden Axe. According to a Variety report, Comedy Central has ordered 10 episodes with Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan and American Dad executive producer Joe Chandler listed as co-creators. The pair will also co-write the first episode and executive produce the series, which is being animated at Titmouse. This comes hot on the heels of the announcement that McMahan’s Star Trek: Lower Decks series will be ending with season five. Some of the main cast and characters have been announced, as well. Matthew Rhys (The Americans) voices cantankerous battle dwarf Gilius Thunderhead, Danny Pudi (Community) voices novice adventurer Hampton Squib, Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty) voices battle sorceress Tyris Flare, Liam McIntyre (The Flash) voices brawny battle warrior Ax Battler and Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks) voices the humanoid panther known as Chronos “Evil” Lait, who hails from Golden Axe III.
The first Golden Axe game debuted back in 1989, spawning multiple sequels and spinoffs. A poorly received revival featuring the return of Tyris Flare—Golden Axe: Beast Rider—launched in 2008, and something new for the series was teased during The Game Awards 2023. There’s currently no release date in place for the Golden Axe animated series. Source: Variety
