The Gundam franchise never does anything by halves… so to kick off plans for its 45th anniversary celebration, we’re getting a slew of news about live events, new projects, and much more. And we’re starting with a triple-barreled 30th anniversary project! The next three years will bring with it the “Gundam GWX 30th Anniversary Project”—celebrating the Big 3-0 for Mobile Fighter G Gundam (this year), Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (in 2025) and After War Gundam X (in 2026). The project was announced with the celebratory image above, featuring each show’s protagonist dressed for the occasion. An anniversary project is also being teased for G Gundam. Said teaser includes a logo, as well as character setting art for a “new character.” The exact form this project will take is yet to be revealed.
The 45th anniversary’s first key visual has also been revealed, featuring the RX-78-2 and a new moon.
Fans wanting to get up close and personal will have their chance this summer with the opening of GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE -ROAD TO 2025-. The free event, which will take place across all 47 prefectures in Japan, will include corners showcasing the history and setting of Mobile Suit Gundam, as well as some of the franchise’s most epic confrontations.A large-scale version of the event will be held in Tokyo and Osaka in spring 2025, including a 1/12-scale “Earth Color ver.” Gundam statue.
Also at the event will be “Operation Gundam R”—where the “R” stands for “recycle.” Gunpla enthusiasts will be invited to recycle their empty model kit runners at the GUNDAM CONNECT BOX. The recycling station will be equipped with an LED screen sharing messages from fans, and a Halo Message Board will include locally-relevant information and motifs.
Last but not least (for now), a Gunpla-centric exhibition is planned for August. Stand Up, Gunpla Circle! GUNPLA EXHIBITION feat. GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE will invite circles of Gundam model builders to share their best work. Some of these models will be chosen for exhibition at GUNDAM NEW FUTURE.More news on the 45th anniversary—and 30th anniversaries—will be coming soon. For now, you can see where it all started by watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam right here on Crunchyroll!
