Japan Box Office: Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction Anime Film 1st Part Makes 7th Place Debut

The reason for the postponement was explained as “to deliver a work that better meets the expectations of our customers.”

In its sixth weekend, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle, the first part of the Haikyu!! FINAL duology anime films, earned 531 million yen (3.51 million USD) on 354,000 admissions (146 percent of its previous fifth weekend revenue). The film moved up one more spot from last weekend to second place, bringing its cumulative total revenue since its release to 7.9 billion yen (52.18 million USD) on 5.5 million admissions. The film now ranks 85th in the Japanese box office ranking of all-time (including both Japanese and foreign films), surpassing Studio Ghibli’s 2006 film, Tales from Earthsea, with 7.84 billion yen.

Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony, the Doraemon anime franchise’s latest 43rd feature film, made 327 million yen (2.16 million USD) on 267,000 admissions, ranking third — one spot down from last weekend — in its fourth weekend. Its cumulative total revenue has reached 2.4 billion yen (15.85 million USD) on 1.99 million admissions. Following last weekend’s return to the top 10 after an 11-week absence, Godzilla Minus One still ranked fifth in its 21st weekend. The 30th Japanese Godzilla film has earned 6.8 billion yen (44.92 million USD) on 4.49 million admissions from its domestic run.

After making its six-place debut last weekend, the live-action film adaptation of Fujimomo’s romance shojo manga Lovesick Ellie (known as Koiwazurai no Ellie in Japan) ranked eighth in its second weekend. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the feature film sequel from the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed franchise, ranked tenth in its ninth weekend, one spot down from last weekend. The official website reported on March 25 that the film has made 4,107,911,810 yen (27.14 million USD) on 2,435,677 admissions in 59 days since its release in Japan on January 26.
