Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Town Musicians of Bremen and Pied Piper of Hamelin: These six iconic Grimm Brothers fairy tales are getting a dark makeover from WIT Studio and design group CLAMP in the anime anthology project The Grimm Variations. The six-episode series today released a new trailer and key visual at Netflix’s AnimeJapan 2024 panel, giving a juicy taste of each episode before they hit the service on April 17.Confirmed cast members include Misato Fukuen as Charlotte, Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Jakob and Kenji Nojima as Wilhelm.
Each story is helmed by a different director, working with scriptwriter Michiko Yokote, character designer Naohiro Osugi and music composer Akira Miyagawa as follows:
Episode 1, Cinderella: Yoko Kanamori (‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess)
Episode 2, Red Riding Hood: Yasuhiro Akamatsu (Attack on Titan episode director)
Episode 3, Hansel and Gretel: Junichiro Hashiguchi (Onipan! assistant director)
Episode 4, The Elves and the Shoemaker: Yumi Kamakura (Ranking of Kings episode director)
Episode 5, The Town Musicians of Bremen: Masato Takeuchi (More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers. episode director)
Episode 6, Pied Piper of Hamelin: Shintaro Nakazawa (Haikyu!! episode director)
Prologue/Epilogue: Yutaro Kubo, Satomi Maiya
The Grimm project was originally announced in 2021, with Netflix’s partnership with the CLAMP team, and other anime creatives, for new anime projects announced in 2020.
