Visitors to last year’s exhibition of cels from the legendary 1988 anime film Akira got a special treat: a soundtrack of remixed music from the film accompanied their browsing. There was just one problem: you could only hear these remixes at the exhibition, and the vast majority of us were not in attendance.
Well, good news for the vast majority of us: those tracks will be available this summer.
AKIRA REMIX collects 19 tracks across two discs, remixing the film soundtrack by music collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi. Writer and director Katsuhiro Otomo produced the collection himself, selecting three musical artists to put their unique spins on the iconic soundtrack.
Legendary J-folk performer Makoto Kubota (of Makoto Kubota & the Sunset Gang) remixes the 13 tracks on Disc 1. The six tracks on Disc 2 are split evenly between PIZZICATO FIVE founding member Yasuharu Konishi and composer Kuniaki Haishima (whose soundtracks include Monster and Macross Zero).
Pre-orders are now open for the album, which is priced at 4,400 yen. AKIRA REMIX officially goes on sale on August 21.
And remember, you can watch the original Akira film, subtitled and dubbed, right here on Crunchyroll!
