Look Back’s anime film adaptation continues to draw praise from critics and viewers while more and more theaters across Japan pick up the movie. This has pushed the adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga to over 1 billion yen on Monday, July 16, – a standout amount for such a theatrically limited release – with nearly 600,000 tickets sold!

Look Back Anime Film Passes 1 Billion Yen at Japanese Box Office

In just 18 days, Look Back has made 1,017,961,780 yen (US$6.41 million) on the back of 599,731 tickets purchased, making it one of the fastest films to reach that number with such a limited number of theaters showing the movie. Since opening in 119 theaters, that number has increased to over 165 with more planning to show the 59-minute flick over the next few weeks.

Look Back’s Japanese theatrical run could be compared with 2022’s The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie, which opened in one less theater than Look Back and continued to collect more screens throughout the year. The Nakano sisters earned 267 million yen (US$2.09 million) in its first weekend, compared to Look Back’s 227 million yen (US$1.4 million), and went on to pass 1 billion yen in 19 days, one day slower than Look Back. The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie ended its run with 2.24 billion yen at the Japanese box office.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama (FLIP FLAPPERS) directs Look Back at Studio Durian. Oshiyama also wrote the script and provided the character designs. Kiyoshi Sameshima is the art director with haruka nakamura providing the music and Avex Pictures distributing the film, which was released in Japan on June 28, 2024.Tatsuki Fujimoto released the Look Back one-shot in July 2021 on Shonen Jump+. An English language version of the manga is released by VIZ Media, which describes Look Back as such:

The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.
