In its second weekend of July 19-21, Kingdom: Daishougun no Kikan (Return of The Great General), the fourth installment in the live-action Kingdom film series based on Yasuhisa Hara’s manga, earned 816 million yen (5.2 million USD) on 529,000 admissions according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. The numbers were down 49 percent from its opening weekend (1.628 billion yen) but it was enough to keep the film in the top spot for a second straight weekend.After 10 days on release, Daishougun no Kikan has made a cumulative 3.6 billion yen (22.93 million USD) on 2.41 million admissions, which were about 158.5 percent of the first two-week revenue (2.271 billion yen) of the previous third installment released in July 2023, Kingdom: The Flame of Destiny.
Gekijou-ban SutoPuri Hajimari no Monogatari ~ Strawberry School Festival!!!~ (Strawberry Prince The Movie: A Story of The Beginning ~Strawberry School Festival!!!!~), the anime feature film inspired by Japanese VTuber boy band Strawberry Prince (SutoPuri for short) opened in 326 theaters across Japan on July 19, making its third place debut. The film’s distributor Bishiroad Move confirmed that the film earned 178 million yen (1.13 million USD) on over 159,000 admissions in its first three-day weekend, which was the highest for a Japanese anime film released in the summer of 2024.Bushiroad Move has released a new visual to commemorate the first weekend’s good result.
Look Back, the anime movie based on the one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), went down four places to sixth in its fourth weekend. Its cumulative total revenue has surpasses 1.2 billion yen (7.65 million USD) on 700,000 admissions according to Mantan Web.
“The Black Invasion” (Kuro no Shinryaku), the first chapter of the Space Battleship Yamato remake anime series’ latest installment, Be Forever Yamato REBEL 3199 (Yamato yo Towa ni REBEL 3199 in Japan), started its theatrical screenings in 70 theaters in Japan on July 19, ranking eighth in its opening weekend. Be Forever Yamato REBEL 3199 is based on the feature film Be Forever Yamato (Yamato yo Towa ni) in 1980, and also includes some elements from the third original TV series Space Battleship Yamato III in 1980-1981. The second of the seven-chapter series (consisting of 26 episodes), “Sekijitsu no Shutsugeki” (literally means “The Sortie on Red Day”), will start its theatrical screenings in Japan on November 22, 2024.
The anime feature film adaptation of Takashi Imashiro’s Ghost Cat Anzu (Bakeneko Anzu-chan in Japan) manga opened in 71 theaters across Japan on July 19, but didn’t make its top 10 debut. Meanwhile, the movie ranked second in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.95/5.0 based on 622 reviews.
Soreike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun (Let’s Go! Anpanman: Baikinman and Lulun of the Picture Book), the 35th feature film in the Anpanman anime franchise, ranked ninth in its fourth weekend of release, six positions down from last weekend. And Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, the 27th feature film in the Case Closed/Detective Conan anime franchise, finally disappeared from the top 10 in its 15th weekend after its debut in Japan on April 12.
