Two anime movies returned to the Japan box office top 10 in the weekend of August 16-18 thanks to revival screenings — HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle and THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha.

HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle, the first part of the Haikyu!! FINAL duology anime films, held a special one-day-only event titled “The Dumpster Battle Last Match” at the TOHO Cinemas Hibiya theater in Tokyo on August 18, with the event was live-streamed in theaters across Japan. Thanks to the event including the stage event by the voice actors and the revival screening, the movie ranked sixth in the weekend box office ranking for the first time since the weekend of June 14-16. The movie now earned a total 11.5 billion yen (78.39 million USD) from 8.06 million ticket sales, first debuting in Japanese theaters on February 16, 2024. It is also now the 35th top-grossing film of all time ever released in Japan.

One year after its original theatrical run in Japan ended, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK also started its revival screenings in over 380 theaters across Japan starting on August 13. The movie was originally released on December 3, 2022 and ran until August 31, 2023.In its first weekend of the revival screening, the movie ranked ninth, bringing its cumulative total to 16.2 billion yen (110 million USD) on 11.19 million admissions. The movie now ranks 12th in the all-time ranking, surpassing James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar with 15.9 billion yen (108 million USD).

In its second weekend, Eiga: Crayon Shin-chan: Oratachi no Kyoryu Nikki (Crayon Shin-chan The Movie: Our Dinosaurs Diary), the 31st feature film from the Crayon Shin-chan anime franchise, earned 321 million yen (2.19 million USD) on 254,000 admissions, staying at the same second place position from last weekend. After ten days of release, the movie has made a cumulative 1.3 billion yen (8.87 million USD) on 1.11 million admissions in Japan.

The latest feature film in the My Hero Academia anime franchise also held the same third-place spot it did last weekend with 314 million yen (2.14 million USD) on 210,000 admissions. It has now earned a total 2.3 billion yen (15.71 million USD) on 1.65 million admissions since its release on August 2.

The fourth Kingdom live-action film, Kingdom: Daishougun no Kikan (Return of The Great General), ranked fourth — up one position from last weekend — in its sixth weekend, bringing its total to 6.8 billion yen (46.42 million USD) on 4.62 million admissions. As previously reported, the fourth film has become the top-grossing one in the live-action Kingdom film series.After making its eighth place debut last weekend, the live-action film adaptation of Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s coming-of-age manga Blue Period did not appear in the top 10 in its second weekend.
