The much-anticipated Nintendo Museum will open on October 2 in Japan, with Shigeru Miyamoto himself announcing the news today through a special Nintendo Direct this morning. The Super Mario creator toured the space located in Uji City, Kyoto, showcasing many of the interactive elements of the museum including a recreation of a Japanese apartment in the 1970s, a digital card game display and giant controllers that make you feel like a Pikmin while trying to pick up (and use!) a big Wii Remote.
The museum will have a huge exhibition space on the second floor with items from Nintendo’s very long history set up in eras and consoles. The first floor has eight interactive experiences that need digital coins to play. 10 of these coins are given on an entry card when at the museum, which can be customized with your Mii. On the museum’s website, it states that visitors won’t be able to play all of the experiences even with 10 coins.Outside of these two floors, Nintendo is also holding two paid workshops based on Nintendo’s first products. The “Let’s Make Hanafuda!” and “Try Playing Hanafuda!” workshops cost 2,000 yen (US$14) and 500 yen (US$3.50) on top of the ticket price and let people take home the cards they make.
The museum also has a cafe that allows visitors to make their own burger out of a possible 270,000 combinations, as well as a shop only open to ticket holders with exclusive merchandise.Tickets for October and November 2024 are currently available to apply for through a lottery system on the museum’s website with tickets costing 3,300 yen (US$22.50) for adults. Tickets for later months will be available through the same system when the calendar rolls around.
