This year marks the 45th anniversary of Hayao Miyazaki’s feature-length directorial debut film, the classic Lupin The 3rd The Castle of Cagliostro. To commemorate the anniversary, TMS Entertainment, revealed that the film will get a re-release in theaters nationwide across Japan, giving people the chance to relive some of the most iconic scenes in anime history and the launchpad of the biggest anime director in the world.
A special poster was released for the Lupin The 3rd The Castle of Cagliostro 45th anniversary screenings with the November 29 re-release date.
Lupin The 3rd The Castle of Cagliostro was originally released in Japan on December 15, 1979, with Hayao Miyazaki in his feature film directorial debut at Tokyo Movie Shinsha, now known as TMS Entertainment. Cagliostro is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential anime films of all time not in small part for helping launch the career of Miyazaki into the great director we now know, but also inspiring generations of anime creators.
A 4K UHD release of Lupin The 3rd The Castle of Cagliostro with a remastered 7.1 surround soundtrack was released in 2019 in Japan, followed by a US release by Discotek Media in July 2021. Discotek describes the film as such:
In the twilight of his career, master thief Lupin the Third’s latest and greatest caper has hit a snag. What should’ve been bags of cash from a national casino turns out to be expert counterfeits! Together with his partner-in-crime Jigen, Lupin heads to the remote European nation of Cagliostro to exact revenge. Not everything goes as planned; the two encounter Clarisse, a royal damsel in distress being forced to marry the sinister Count Cagliostro against her will.
