In a statement on the official home page for animation studio Khara, director / Khara founder Hideaki Anno (Rebuild of Evangelion, Shin Kamen Rider) has announced that Studio Khara has acquired the rights to produce a new Space Battleship Yamato animated theatrical film, including permission from Voyager Holdings to produce new animation and permission from Tohokushinsha Film Corporation to use the copyright.
The as-yet-untitled new film is currently in the planning stages, with production on the movie tentatively scheduled to begin in 2025. The story of the film will differ from the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, 2202, and 3199 anime which reboot the original Space Battleship Yamato series for a modern audience.
In the statement, Anno noted that he wouldn’t be the same person he is today if he hadn’t encountered the original Space Battleship Yamato anime some 50 years ago. He also expressed his gratitude to and respect for the staff and cast of the original series, and stated that his goal was to continue creating new and interesting works of art so that he could pass along his love of Yamato to future generations.
