Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has had no trouble staying busy, even after the completion of the seemingly endless work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When he had some downtime to rest, he ended up starting his own YouTube channel to document the development process. As if that didn’t fill up enough of the day already, he revealed in his Finale Special that he’s been working on a new game project for the past couple years.Naturally, the details of said game project have yet to be divulged. Still, it’s interesting to listen to Sakurai go through the process of pitching his proposal in 2021 and aiming to fully assemble his team by April 2022. There’s plenty more of interest in the video, which includes some reflection on Sakurai’s past and his personal game philosophy. He touches upon how the games he makes aren’t necessarily the kind of games he wants to play. “That’s why I created Kirby for beginners despite being a proficient gamer myself,” he added. It’s also why he later made Meteos despite not being any good at puzzle games. He then spends most of the episode talking about how he makes videos in the first place, from scripts through the cost of production and beyond. It’s a fascinating look at a fascinating creator, and a fitting finale to a series that will be informing game developers and players alike for years to come.
