The official Godzilla accounts announced tonight that a brand new Godzilla film is in production from the award-winning team behind Godzilla Minus One. The video only revealed that Takashi Yamazaki will return as director, writer and VFX supervisor and that more details will be revealed later. A short message from Yamazaki was also released.

Yamazaki previously spoke about a sequel to Godzilla Minus One in multiple interviews. In an interview with Collider before the Academy Award win, Yamazaki said that for any (then) hypothetical sequel, he wanted to “date it with how long it’s been in our timeline as to what the characters have gone through.” It has not been confirmed if the new Godzilla film will be a sequel.
Godzilla Minus One was initially released in Japan on November 3, 2023, eventually grossing, according to The Japan Times, US$116 million around the world, with 7.65 billion yen of that coming from Japan, making it the 93rd highest-grossing film of all time in the country. Minus One also has the honor of being the first non-English language film to win Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards and Best Picture at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize.Toho released the film around the world directly and through local distributors and describes the movie as such:
