Uchu Majin Daikengo may be a more obscure mecha anime title, but the Tori Pro series features names that will be well-known to mecha anime fans. And now, the 1978 series is getting a Blu-ray release in Japan.The anime follows Prince Liger, Cleo and their robot sidekicks Anike and Otoke as they pilot the mecha Daikengo across space to free their homeland. The series was the first and only production of the short-lived studio Tori Pro, with uncredited assistance from Toei Animation and Macross makers Studio Nue.
The series features mechanical designs by Kunio Okawara, whose work appears across the Gundam franchise and in dozens of other mecha anime series. Director Masami Anno’s other credits include Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs and Ninja Robots. And, according to other staff from the show, Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino did uncredited storyboard work.The Blu-ray release will include all 26 episodes of the series, and the limited-edition version will new art by artist and animator Kazuhiro Ochi.
The Uchu Majin Daikengo Blu-ray box is now available for pre-order from the Toei store. The set will be released on March 12, 2025.
