Ahead of the TV broadcast of the latest Gundam anime, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- was released in theaters across Japan on Friday (and next month in North America), editing a few episodes of the future TV anime into the feature-length format. To celebrate its first place in the weekend audience rankings and the release last week, a new trailer was released with some slight (read: very large!) spoilers set to “Plazma” by Kenshi Yonezu, the theme song for the feature.

The 16th installment of the Gundam franchise was released in Japan on January 17 and has so far made 598 million yen (US$3.84 million) in the first three days of showings, with over 352,500 tickets sold, putting it at first place in the Japanese box office charts. Also announced today was the second-week theatrical gift, a Design Works setting book with the original production materials. Distribution for the book will start on January 25.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is co-produced at studio khara, which handled the Evangelion movie series, and Sunrise, which has worked on the Gundam series since the first TV anime series in 1979. Kazuya Tsurumaki, who co-directed the Rebuild of Evangelion film series including the final installment Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, serves as director, alongside series composition writer Yoji Enokido and Hideaki Anno, character designer Take (Pokémon) and mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita.GKIDS will be releasing Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- in North America starting February 28, 2025.
