Advance theatrical screenings of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, a re-edited episode version of the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series, began in 426 theaters (including 52 IMAX ones) across Japan on January 17, 2025. The anime’s official website announced that it earned 598,832,300 yen (3.85 million USD) on 352,522 admissions in its first three days between Friday and Sunday, making a first place debut in the weekend box office ranking.The first three-day weekend gross was 114.3 percent of that of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway in 2021 (524 million yen) and 56.2 percent of that of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM in 2024 (1.066 billion yen). As reported, the theatrical re-edited edition will also release in North American theaters starting February 28, 2025.
Gekijouban Project Sekai Kowareta SEKAI to Utaenai MIKU (“Project Seikai the Movie: The Broken World and The Miku Who Can’t Sing”), an theatrical anime film inspired by the HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE! smartphone game, opened in 148 theaters on January 17, earning 307 million yen (1.98 million USD) on 232,500 admissions to make a second place debut in the weekend ranking according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. Meanwhile, the film ranked #9 in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.78/5.0 based on 216 reviews.
In its sixth weekend, the live-action film adaptation of Akane Shimizu’s manga series Cells at Work! ranked fourth, two places down from last weekend, bringing its cumulative total to 5.2 billion yen (33.54 million USD) earned from 3.9 million ticket sales. Now it has become lead actor Takeru Sato‘s second top-grossing film in his career, behind only the 2014 film Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno with 5.25 billion yen.
Gekijouban Nintama Rantaro Dokutake Ninja-tai Saikyou no Gunshi (“Nintama Rantaro the Movie: The Strongest Strategist of the Dokutake Ninja Squad”) was down one position to sixth in its fifth weekend. The film’s official X (formerly Twitter) announced on January 20 that the film’s cumulative total gross had already surpassed 1.5 billion yen (9.67 million USD) on one million admissions. After making a third place debut last weekend, the live-action feature film adaptation of Masayuki Qusumi (story) and Jiro Taniguchi’s (art) The Solitary Gourmet (known as Kodoku no Gourmet in Japan) manga series dropped to ninth in its second weekend.
