The Spirited Away stage play, based on the 2001 fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli, is heading to Shanghai, China for the summer season of 2025. The production will run from July 7 to August 3, 2025 at the Shanghai Culture Square venue. The main cast for the Shanghai production has not yet been revealed.
Spirited Away began production as a stage play in March 2022 at the Imperial Theater venue in Tokyo, Japan with Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi double-cast as Chihiro, the protagonist. Actors Rina Kawaei and Momoko Fukuchi joined the cast of the play as Chihiro in 2024. The play has also been staged at the London Colosseum venue in London, England, where it ran from April – August, 2024.
GKIDS releases a filmed version of the stage play under the title SPIRITED AWAY: Live On Stage, and describes the story as follows:
Chihiro’s family is moving to a new house, but when they stop on the way to explore an abandoned village, her parents undergo a mysterious transformation and Chihiro is whisked into a world of fantastic spirits ruled over by the sorceress, Yubaba. Put to work in a magical bathhouse for spirits and demons, Chihiro must use all her wits to survive in this strange new place, find a way to free her parents and return to the normal world.
