Japan Box Office: Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- Stays at No.1 in 2nd Weekend

In its second weekend, advance theatrical screenings of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, a re-edited episode version of the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series, earned 528 million yen (3.41 million USD) on 306,000 admissions — only a 12 percent week-on-week drop — retaining first place in the box office ranking according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. The anime's official website also confirmed that the film's performance in the two-day weekend between Saturday and Sunday was 107.6 percent in gross and 106.8 percent in attendance compared to the previous weekend.The screenings now have a total of 1,432,794,300 yen (9.24 million USD) earned from 856,371 ticket sales in ten days since debuting in 426 Japanese theaters on January 17. The two-weekend gross was 75.2 percent of that of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM in February 2024 (1.9 billion yen).

The live-action film adaptation of Kengo Hanazawa’s action manga series UNDER NINJA opened in 340 theaters on January 24, earning 226 million yen (1.46 million USD) on 160,000 admissions to make a third-place debut. Meanwhile, the film directed by Yuichi Fukuda (Gintama live-action series) ranked seventh in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.21/5.0 based on 1,175 reviews.

Fourth place belonged to the live-action film adaptation of Akane Shimizu’s manga series Cells at Work! again, bringing its cumulative total to 5.5 billion yen (35.49 million USD) on 4.12 million admissions. It has now become the fifth top-grossing Japanese film opened in 2024 and lead actor Takeru Sato’s top-grossing film in his career, surpassing his 2014 film Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno with 5.25 billion yen (33.87 million USD).

Gekijouban Project Sekai Kowareta SEKAI to Utaenai MIKU (“Project Seikai the Movie: The Broken World and The Miku Who Can’t Sing”), the theatrical anime film inspired by the HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE! smartphone game went down to sixth place, four places down from its opening weekend. The film’s official X (formerly Twitter) announced that the movie had earned a cumulative 570 million yen (3.68 million USD) on 390,000 admissions in ten days since its release.

Gekijouban Nintama Rantaro Dokutake Ninja-tai Saikyou no Gunshi (“Nintama Rantaro the Movie: The Strongest Strategist of the Dokutake Ninja Squad”) was down one position to seventh in its sixth weekend. The live-action feature film adaptation of Masayuki Qusumi (story) and Jiro Taniguchi’s (art) The Solitary Gourmet (known as Kodoku no Gourmet in Japan) manga series remained ninth place in its third weekend, unchanged from the previous weekend.

Advance theatrical screenings of SK8 the Infinity EXTRA PART, a 25-minute newly-produced OVA from the SK8 the Infinity anime franchise, began in ten theaters in Japan on January 24. Although not appearing in the overall weekend box office ranking due to the smaller number of theaters, it made a first-place debut in Kogyo Tsushinsha’s mini-theater ranking. Cute High Earth Defense Club ETERNAL LOVE!, the 10th-anniversary film for the Cute High Earth Defense Club anime franchise, opened in 54 theaters on January 24 and did not make a Top 10 debut in the overall weekend box office ranking.
