Ishiguro’s original Nemurubaka manga ran in Tokuma Shoten’s Monthly Comic Ryu from 2006 to 2008, then was compiled in one tankobon volume. The story focused on Yumi Irisu and Ruka Kujirai, who live in the same room in a women’s dormitory during college. Irisu has nothing to devote herself to and spends her days working part-time at a used bookstore. Ruka is always broke, but pursues his dream as the guitarist and vocalist of an indie band called “Pete Moss.” The two spent their days drinking at cheap izakaya, and watch old foreign dramas to pass the time. Their days are slow but somehow comfortable. Then one day, Ruka gets a call from a major music record company, and a big change occurs in their daily life.Shiori Kubo (A member of the idol group Nogizaka46) stars as Yumi Irisu, with Yuna Taira (Chizuru Hishiro in the ReLIFE live-action film) plays Ruka Kujirai. Yugo Sakurai, best known for his directorial works for the Baby Assassins action film franchise, serves as director. The trailer also introduces the theme song “Nemurubaka” sung by Ruka in the film. The lyrics were written by the manga author Ishiguro himself, and the music was composed by Asahi (Necry Taikie guitarist), who is a long-time big fan of the original manga.
