14 Anime Films Which Surpassed One Billion Yen Box Office Revenue in 2024

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPA) — an industry organization comprised of the four major motion picture production and distribution companies including Shochiku, Toho, Toei and Kadokawa Pictures — held a New Year's press conference in Tokyo on January 29 to announce the Japanese box office data for fiscal year 2024.According to the data published on MPPA's official website, 1,190 films (685 Japanese and 505 foreign films) were released in Japan in 2024. The number of admissions was 144.44 million, down 11.09 million from the previous year. Japanese films earned a record 155.8 billion yen (1.04 billion USD), while foreign films fell to 51.1 billion yen (329 million USD), down 69.8 percent from the previous year.

Japanese films earned a record 155.8 billion yen (1.04 billion USD), while foreign films fell to 51.1 billion yen (329 million USD), down 69.8 percent from the previous year. In total, the overall annual box-office gross was 206.983 billion yen (1.33 billion USD), which was down 6.7 percent from the previous year and the 11th-highest record since 2000.

The number of Japanese films with box-office revenues of one billion yen or more decreased to 31, down three from the previous year. The number of foreign films grossing one billion yen or more decreased to ten, down five from the previous year. The highest-grossing Japanese film was Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, the 27th feature film in the Case Closed/Detective Conan anime franchise, which earned 15.8 billion yen (102 million USD) from its total domestic run. The top-grossing foreign film was Inside Out 2 with 5.36 billion yen (34.5 million USD).The number of Japanese anime films earning over one billion yen increased by two to 14 from last year, while the number of live-action film adaptations of Japanese manga surpassing the one billion yen mark decreased by eight from last year. Only two, Kingdom: Return of The Great General with 8.03 billion yen (51.7 million USD) and Golden Kamuy with 2.99 billion yen (19.3 million USD) which both stared Kento Yamazaki, surpassed the one billion yen mark.
