The 1980s was a huge time for otaku culture. Gundam was on the rise, new magazines were being published and the first generation of otaku were joining the industry. Next month, a new book explores that formative time—from the point of view of someone who was there for it all.The Devil of Media Mix: Shinichiro Inoue’s History of Otaku Culture will contain the reminiscences of the former vice president of KADOKAWA, covering his life and work as a fan of the properties he covered and represented. Critic and pop culture expert Tsunehiro Uno provides commentary at the end of each chapter.The book will feature a cover by illustrator circle CLAMP, depicting Inoue surrounded by touchstones of 80s fandom:
The Devil of Media Mix: Shinichiro Inoue’s History of Otaku Culture goes on sale March 18. Customers who pre-order the book will have the chance to attend a special pre-release talk show on March 1, emceed by writer and Seikaisha president Katsushi Ota.
