Details are light at the moment, but developer Pixelity Inc. revealed that it is officially working on a Neon Genesis Evangelion extended reality game. The licensed project is currently planned as a trilogy based on the original 26-episode TV anime, the first part of which is eyeing a 2026 release. Here’s what we know so far: Players will follow the events of the series as an original character. They’ll be tasked with completing quests and battling enemies as they progress through key events from the anime. There will be “interactive and cooperative gameplay with familiar characters” throughout the action-adventure.
Extended reality (XR) games encompass a variety of immersive technologies, including mixed reality, augmented reality and virtual reality. Exactly which type of realities the Evangelion XR game is aiming for has yet to be determined, but more information is on the way via the Pixelity website and social media channels. Directed by Hideaki Anno and originally kicking off its broadcast in October 1995, the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime is currently available on home video through GKIDS and streaming on Netflix. Here’s how GKIDS describes it:
In 2015, Tokyo-3 is under attack from “Angels”, extraordinary beings that possess various special abilities. Multipurpose Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion is the only method to counter these Angels, and Shinji Ikari is chosen as its pilot. The battle for the fate of humankind has begun. But exactly what are the Angels? What is destined for the young pilots? And what will become of humanity?
