Variety shared an exclusive report covering what’s in store for this year’s Annecy Animation Showcase, which plans to highlight five titles as part of Cannes’ Animation Day on May 18. Among them is Sunny, which has Tekkonkinkreet director Michael Arias helming an adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga.
Details are light at the moment, but GKIDS is producing the dwarf studios feature, with completion penciled in for sometime in 2029. While it’s not directly described as such, the still image depicts stop-motion animation, which is a specialty of dwarf studios thanks to projects like Pokémon Concierge and Rilakkuma and Kaoru.
Michael Arias previously directed Tekkonkinkreet, which is also based on a Matsumoto manga. Arias also translates the English edition of the Sunny manga. Here’s how publisher VIZ Media describes it:
What is Sunny? Sunny is a car. Sunny is a car you take on a drive with your mind. It takes you to the place of your dreams. Sunny is the story of beating the odds, in the ways that count. It’s the brand-new masterwork from Eisner Award-winner Taiyo Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most innovative and acclaimed manga artists.
