As announced earlier this month, a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is in the works. Titled Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, the new anime project will bridge the gap between the film and the preceding Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Following the first version that ran for two weeks from September 20 to October 3, the second version of the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM movie's special edition started its two-week theatrical screening in Japan on November 1, and ranked sixth in the weekend box office charts, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha. It has been 41 weeks since the release of the film's original edition.As the feature film sequel in the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM opened in Japan on January 26, 2024, making 4.82 billion yen (31.75 million USD) on 2.88 million admissions from its original theatrical run by May 24.

At today's special screening of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM in Japan, fans got a big surprise: the story isn't over! Director Mitsuo Fukuda announced at the screening after the film there is one more project in the works with the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO.According to the producer Hisakazu Naka who also spoke at the event, the project will serve as a sequel to 2004's Gundam Seed Destiny and a prequel to FREEDOM, bridging the gap between the series and the new film.

The R15 version (noted as those under 15 years of age not allowed to see), which had 327 cuts retaken and the sound re-dubbed to express “the horror story as originally envisioned by the production team," followed on October 4, 2024.As reported on Monday, the film's cumulative total box office gross — which combined the gross of the original and R15 version — surpassed the three billion yen mark by October 12.
